Sen. Leahy Says Cheney Cursed at Him
Thu Jun twenty-fourth.
By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - Vice President Cheney cursed at Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy during a confrontation on the Senate floor while members were having their annual group picture taken earlier this week, Leahy and Senate sources said Thursday.
Senate aides with knowledge of the encounter Tuesday said the vice president confronted Leahy about some of the Democrat's criticism about alleged improprieties in Iraq (news - web sites) military contracts awarded to Halliburton Co. Cheney, who as vice president is president of the Senate, is a former CEO of Halliburton.
Leahy responded by criticizing the White House for standing by allies who had accused Democrats of being anti-Catholic last year in opposing one of President Bush (news - web sites)'s judicial nominees, said one Senate aide, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Cheney then responded, "F--- off" or "F--- you," the aide said.
That account was backed by another aide, also speaking on condition of anonymity.
Leahy, D-Vt., confirmed that the confrontation took place but would not provide details.
"I think he was just having a bad day," Leahy said. "I was kind of shocked to hear that kind of language on the floor."
Cheney's office also wouldn't go into detail, but confirmed the two men traded remarks.
"That doesn't sound like language that the vice president would use, but there was a frank exchange of views," said Kevin Kellems, a spokesman for Cheney
:hairy:muhaha:hairy I couldn't help laughing at the irony. This is one of the men who wants to further censor television and radio, part of the right wing judgmental posse. Time for him to take a step off that self created pedestal :supergrin.
I don't mind hearing the word fuck, but I think the phrase fuck you to another person is disrespectful.

I am SHOCKED....a hypocrytical Republican? NO WAY. Someone should put him on a ten second delay.

Hypocrisy is that administration's theme!
Reminds me of the saying a friend of mine used to say when he went home, "I'm going to make like a goose and flock off."

Between Cheney and Bush, they should put the whole White House on a thirty minute delay. Maybe then people could help Bush speak in a way that makes sense and is pronounced correctly. I remember a speech he made that included him mispronouncing nuclear at least seventeen times. :lubdub

(excerpts from the beginning and end of the following article)
Post Editor Explains Decision to Publish Expletive
By Howard Kurtz
Washington Post Staff Writer
The New York Times said Vice President Cheney had used "an obscenity" against Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.). The Los Angeles Times had Cheney saying "Go . . . yourself." CNN said Cheney used "the F-word."
But The Washington Post printed the word yesterday for the first time since publishing the Kenneth Starr report in (ninety-eight). And that set the town buzzing.
"When the vice president of the United States says it to a senator in the way in which he said it on the Senate floor," says Executive Editor Leonard Downie Jr., "readers need to judge for themselves what the word is because we don't play games at The Washington Post and use dashes." ...
(skips to end of article)
...A few dozen readers have called to complain, some saying the word was inappropriate in a family newspaper read by children. "How utterly sad for your fine paper," a Springfield man said in an e-mail.
Others saw signs of political bias. "If Leahy had used the profanity when speaking to Cheney, you guys wouldn't even have bothered to print it," a Colorado woman wrote.
But an Arlington woman wrote: "Anyone who is old enough to have an interest in reading the newspaper has presumably heard the word and is aware of its meaning."

I'm impressed (?) that the Post had the guts to print the word. I agree with the last woman's statements. I don't really think it's a "family" newspaper; what eight year old picks up the paper? (minus the comics, maybe) And if your eight year old does, just stop him on that day. C'mon people, seriously. I think some people just didn't want it out there that he said that. Ugh.

I think it would be VERY ironic if the the Post got fined for printing the word FUCK... it would give the late night comedians a lot more to :muhaha about and it would give the democrats a lot of interesting fodder for the campaigns.

:ohboyHow ridiculous. If a kid young enough to have never heard FUCK sees it written in the paper (which is somewhat dubious in the first place) as "f---", how is that any better than the real thing? If they care at all (again, unlikely) they'll probably just ask their parents for clarification. How long are people going to try to fool their children for?

I have some ideas about how to use the word fuck with regard to Dick Cheney.
Dear Dick,
Fuck you, you fucking fuck. You're a fucking war-mogering, blood for oil profiteer. You make me fucking sick you fucking hypocrite.

It depends on the age, I think. I'm not planning on explaining that word to my lil one 'til she's a bit older and asks. Thank goodness, right now, she still thinks words like dumb and stupid are bad words. You should hear her tell me when I accidentally slip and say one of them - it's so cute :).
(She only just turned seven yrs. old.)
Another cute note, one night when she was sick, she was sleeping with me on the couch while I was watching ER. I thought she was sleeping, at least. One of the doctors called another one an asshole, then she looked up at me and asked what it meant. I had to think quick, lol. I said, "A hassle?" Thank goodness she nodded, and I replied with, "Oh, that's just when somebody's giving you a hard time." Now she's always calling me or her grandparents a hassle when we're trying to get her to do something (like get ready for bed).
Another time, she was wondering what LMAO meant when I was trying to tell my father. I whispered the second to last word since she was standing there, but she knew it started with an A, and since her name does too, she assumed LMAO was talking about her. Now every time she says something funny, or is talking about something funny, she says she laughed so hard she laughed her A off - to her meaning, she laughed so hard she laughed the first part of her name right off. I had a time trying to explain this to her teacher last school yr. LOL :).

I find this a rather interesting topic, thinking hmmmm :hmmm to myself- my family used to say I had a gutter mouth, since then I have cleaned it up quite a bit and I do feel better for it. When I was cursing everything I knew I was using the words to get out my anger and unhappiness or unsettledness within myself. :digdeep I just find this a bit ironic since when I spoke to my psychiatrist today about trying to find myself in my twenties (years) -- she said that was a load of bullshit! :surprise
Getting back in the political arena, isn't it interesting how when Clinton was seeing another woman it hit huge news and tabloids, but it was done horribly so- but gone unnoticed or not given as much attention to until then? Now when Cheney curses in public people pay more attention then when a stranger does?! just a thought!
