Hello- my doc has told me it’s unlikely I’ll be able to play m cello anymore- I’ve hurt my hand and never let it heal, and the poor thing can’t take the strain anymore. So now I’m wondering, without that, who am I? Whenever someone asks me what I do well, or what I enjoy doing, or just to tell about myself, playing the cello is ALWAYS somewhere near the top of the list. I love it. Music is my soul. And yes, I can still sing and all, but the cello is sooo important to me… Have any of you ever lost something you did well?

I am so sorry to hear this happened to you. I play viola, and it is very important to me, so I can't imagine how you must feel. Who are you without your music? You are still you, just without the ability to perfect a talent you loved. Like chrizgirl said- when one door closes another opens. Another person said we often look so long at the closed door that we don't notice that another door has opened. Please keep your heart and mind open to new experiences. It seems, maybe your life is intended to take another direction. Just trust what God is doing, he'll show you the way. If cello is extremely important to you, and you feel that you can recover, then go for it, and keep trying. With enough determination and time, anything can be accomplished. You just have to wait and see where this all takes you. I know you will be ok, and I will keep you in my prayers. Take care!

Amy - I can really relate to losing something you are good at. I have been riding horses and competing for years. That has basically been my first and only PASSION in life and has been since I can remember. I have always truly believed that horses were meant to be in my life and my ability a gift from God.
Two years ago my husband up and left me for another woman and broke my heart. With the resulting financial situation, I am unable at this time to have a horse. I sold the majority of my "stuff" and don't know if it will ever be a part of my life again. The sense of loss was devastating. I lost my husband, home, horse, social life that was attached to showing horses, and my dog.
However. . . I have grown so much in ways that I never would have been able to without those circumstances and pain. Horses were ALL I did and since then I have picked up some other activities - skiing, bicycling, hiking, learning to relax and not be so driven and intense and competitive and work on recovery. I have a wonderful man in my life that has brought me to a different level in a relationship than I've ever had before.
Like Lissa I believe that God doesn't close a door without opening another. You mentioned you have singing talent -- perhaps this is an opportunity to put more focus on your voice. Or maybe there is something else in your life that needs your attention? It is also entirely possible that you will be able to play the cello. The body can do amazing repair of itself when given encouragement. Best of luck! :love Mary
