View Full Version : Why do you reside in the place you live
[moved to Getting To Know You]
I was wondering why people chose to live where they live. I would like to know what your dislikes and likes are regarding the area in which you reside. I am asking because I would like to move and am experiencung difficulty in the decision making process.
I currently live in northern virginia and my opinions on the area are as follows:
****. I like the diversity
****. I like the opportunities available regarding jobs and "extracurricular" activities
****. I abhore the traffic
****. Although the jobs are bountiful, my degree from college can limit those opportunities
****. I enjoy the fact that friends and family are close
****. The free museums are a great asset to the region
****. The geography is not too bad
****. Every outing takes twice as long as it should for the distance to time ratio
Thank you for your input in advance
I currently live in New York City; I moved here about a year ago from San Francisco. It has been a serious adjustment living here; especially during summer. New York City in summer is my idea of hell, pretty much. The entire city smells like steaming piles of garbage. I had visited before moving here, but only in winter. However the other seasons are ok. Anyway I enjoy living here b/c I have a lot of friends here and a job I like, but I really miss the aesthetic beauty of San Francisco- I will never feel as much of an emotional connection to another place as I do to that city. I miss being able to drive, and I hate how much NYC costs to live in (as if SF was not bad enough). I do like how everything is so readily accessible here within a few blocks of where I live, and I like having a winter again.

I'm a :fishy that gets about quite a bit! I grew up in London :uk and currently live in Brighton :uk, which I won't go into since I don't imagine you're thinking of actually crossing international boundaries in your move.
Possibly the best place I have ever lived is Southern Connecticut :uk, just over the NY border. That region truly has everything you could ever wish - it's on the coast, near to Manhattan and not too far from Boston either. There are some lovely green suburb-y areas.
Let me know if there's anything else I can tell you.

I currently live in Colorado. I used to live in Minnesota for seventeen years until my dad was transferred for his job. I :love colorado because the winters are not bitterly cold, no mosquitoes, very little humidity, the mountains are beautiful and the people seem to be more friendly :happy I do miss how green everything was in MN compared to CO, I miss my family because everyone lives back there, and I miss the huge lakes.

Well, I live in a town in north-western germany (not too far from the dutch border). I've been living here for a bit more than two years now. I simply cam eto this place because the Central Placement Agency for studying at University send me to this Uni.
But I :love it.
:penguin The town has a population of about two-hundred eighty thousand. More than fifty thousand students of three Universities. So it's not too small, but not too big.
:penguin A lot of nature around it and in the city itself.
:penguin It's a very historical town, and some parts of the Old Town are great to see. The city also is home to two crime series on TV :yay
:penguin The University has a great reputation.
:penguin Nice pedestrian zone for shopping and strolling. Great Christmas Market, too.
:penguin We're the BIKE CAPITAL of Germany. :yay you don't have to long distances to cover, you can do a lot by bike. Special lanes, traffic lights,... (bike thieves :winky).
:penguin NOt A LOT cultural stuff, but enough with two theatres, some museums,... It's also close to the biggest german conurbation and big cities...
Sonja
E, Licorice, Sunflower and Isabel Knight-

I will your add your responses to my con and pro list.
Thanks again and happy holidays

I live in Hertfordshire ... for those who don't know, Hertfordshire borders London's home counties on the top side!
Why do I live here? Because my mum moved here about six months ago and I had to come to considering I can't afford to move out!
What do I like about it?
Well, we're on a steep hill so the view from the upstairs front rooms looks past the houses below and instead we see loads of hilly ground/tall trees.
I guess the house is bigger than our old one, even though my bedroom is smaller :ugh
Clean and quiet!
What do I hate about it?
We live on a hill ... need I say more :ugh it kills me having to walk up it to get home everyday :ohboy
It's not my home :sad
Nothing to do here ... isolating because there's no one my age and no way of meeting them even if there was!
Can't get a good signal on my phone!
Transport is crummy ... it's ok if I can get the car, but I can usually only have it at weekends or in the evening :ummm
If I had the choice ... I'd move back to where I used to live ... although this place would be nice if I was coming to visit mum for a few days, but to live I personally prefer somewhere a bit more central to places ... not somewhere really busy and bustling like central london ... but a little bit more alive than here!
I moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from Phoenix, Arizona.
Why I moved to Pittsburgh:
*** Boyfriend got accepted for his medical residency here
*** Boyfriend got accepted for his medical residency here
*** Boyfriend got accepted for his medical residency here
Notice a pattern?
There is no freaking way I'd be in this city otherwise. It is one of the most poorly planned, confusing, TRIANGULAR cities I have ever seen in my life....
But if you love someone, you'd go to the four corners of the earth to be with them.
I guess I'm a living example of this!!!

I'm living in Alaska because my husband is in the Air Force.
I'm hoping soon we will be going to Washington state, though. That's where I grew up and where all of my family is. Plus I just :love it there!

i live in milan, northern italy. it was a bad choise ... to come back to italy after a msc course in uk. i was there sick all the time for teh weather, and the dark etc made me more depressed and restrictive etc, i thought i'd better be back here. i don't like the north here; i don****t have a job that i'd like, and i feel day by day more outsider here. maybe i don't simply want to be here any more.
i'd love to move to US and try to live there. california.. as i'm involved with computers etc, but ultimately thinking also NY. and looks like i'll really do anythign that allows me to move there! i want to give it a try. i know when i escape myself, and this hope to come to US is not simply that.

I love this question because for the first time in my life...I LOVE where I live! I've lived in three different states, NY, Massachusetts and Colorado.
I'm currently in the Hudson Valley of NY state and this is the perfect arrangement for me. I adored the beauty of Colorado, but it was too far from my family.
Where I live now offers me everything I need. It's beautiful here...lots of great nature/mountains to enjoy. The people are very down to earth. There's lots of opportunities to learn things I enjoy/pursue my interests. I've been taking pottery classes since the summer and I love it!
There's tons of opportunity for personal growth here. There are cute, artsy shops, and great vegetarian restaurants. There's always something going on. It's not that far from the city and Massachusetts and Connecticut are easily accessible.
There are several universities not that far so if I wanted to take classes I could. It's a very laid back, comfortable place. Some people might feel it's too "country"...but for me, it's perfect!!!
I finally found the place I feel most comfortable to just be ME and this is where I'd like to stay. I never felt that about any place else I've ever lived. I think feeling like you want to put down roots in a place is VERY important to an overall sense of well-being!

I lived in upstate NY my whole life.. Moved to Mass for college and now I'm in North Carolina..
I didn't have much of a choice in my move to NC.. I had lost my job in NY and this was the first job to come along.. Though I do like it here.. The weather is much better than upstate NY... but this is still not my ideal location.. I'm looking to possibly move myself.

i live on the edge of the United States....the gulf of Mexico. i love it because it is far away from Nebraska where i grew up. the beaches here have sugar white sand that doesn't get hot underfoot in the summer, and in the winter, when the ocean waves blow it into dunes, it looks just like snowdrifts....just without the cold.
