I'm working through this book at the moment that deals with the spiritual aspects of destructive eating behaviours. It teaches you to bring glory to God in all things. Every chapter ends with a prayer asking God to help you deal with whatever that topic addressed.

It's definitely challenged me to think deeper and to rely a bit more on God. I wanted to put a few quotes up here for you that really made me think.

"Jesus confronted the same experience that you and I have had to contend. We can trust Him because He is God and because He has been successful in dealing with experiences similar to ours."

THis was after a chapter talking about temptation and remember that Jesus was tempted by the devil to eat after His forty day fast in the desert after he came to earth.

THis reminds me of the Bible verse One Corinthians Ten verse Thirteen:
"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it."

Another quote:
"We are equipped as Christians to deal with our destructive eating. We have been given everything that pertains to godly living."

This gave me a lot of hope.

I know that I often use food as a method of avoidance and this really got me to thinking about dealing with the underlying problems.
"Avoidance is coping. Avoidance is surviving. Dealing directly with what you previously would have avoided is living."

Just wanted to challenge everyone to think a little. I know I have been thinking a lot lately. Praying for you all.

God Bless
Love

Thanks for sharing the quotes and your message intrigued me. I'm looking for a book that you just described. Could you tell me the name of it? I'm spending the next month and a half focusing on recovering from my ed. I return to college in the fall. For me, recovery will be possible with God. I think it's so important to include spirituality when looking into the eyes of recovery and what that means to each of us. I'm glad to see that the book you are reading is offering you hope. Hold onto that and don't let go. I understand when you thought about using avoidance as a negative coping skill. I've done this too, but it never did me any good. I'm learning to challenge my old beliefs and replace them with those that are healthy that I see here and other sources of support for recovery. Thanks again for sharing and take care,
Laurel

A friend mentioned this to me today...

What if you imagined you were dining with Jesus? (Or God?) What if you picture him across the table, wanting to share this lovely meal with you...letting you know by his smile, warmth, and love that it was ok to eat--even to enjoy it? I plan to really ponder this...I would forget all about the food as enemy if I was dining with Jesus, I think...I am going to try this and prayerfully imagine that its a healing tool.
God bless all of you...

Laurel - the name of the book is "Reasonably thin - the spiritual aspects of over and under eating" and it's by Jesse Dillinger. It doesn't exactly deal with eds in themselves and doesn't mention purging or anything like that but the principals are excellent. Praying that you go well on your journey of recovery. God will always give you the strength you need. God Bless.

Jessi - what a good idea! I think I'm going to try this too

God Bless

Laura-
It's a good point that we as Christians should bring glory to God in all aspects of our lives. I've thought about it and I don't think what I do to my body brings any glory to God. HE gave us food to nourish our bodies, and to give us pleasure, not as another thing to be stressed out about! Thanks for sharing!
