Hi :fishys

I live in Australia, and I don't know if similar problems exist elsewhere, but this is really annoying me...

These "current affairs" programs on sufferers of anorexia... eg sixty minutes, a current affair etc etc

Why are they bothering me so much???

Let me say that I feel very badly for the sufferers, and i am all for raising awareness of EDs... However, these programs use "shock value" to get their message across, and show the worst case scenario...

For example, this show last night showed a girl who had one foot in the grave. And of course they showed her naked, which was completely unecessary... They also asked her what she ate from day to day (answer: virtually nothing)

My mum watched the program and I hated that because it will make her, and the rest of the population think that unless you look like that, you don't have a problem. We should be educating people that EDs are NOT about food and weight, not this!

My T was actually interviewed for ths program, and in her interview, she said exactly the same thing. That awareness needed to be raised that a person does not have to look like that to be sick and suffering. They obviously didn't like that because it wasn't included!

I just had to vent....

I agree, I agree, I agree. I have been told because I am over thirty, I can't have an ed (friends say they didn't think it lasted that long). I also have been told because they see me eating salad??? they think an anorectic doesn't eat at all. This is not discussed either, and it is vital for people to know the truth, not a facet of the truth. I am really interested in hearing someone do a show on women and eating disorders over thirty who have families, careers. A whole new set of issues. I have written to Oprah since she does shows like this, nothing. I think it would open the eyes of a lot of grown women who are perpetually starving to lose who think they don't have a problem because they are over thirty and can "handle it".

Also, the fact that this is not "outgrown", you need to work at it continuously. Good topic!

Yes, in the U.S. that is the way it usually is. We certainly do not believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. IIt is not a problem unless the person is near death, which is so sad. There are many misconceptions about ed's that are perpetuated by the media and I feel that it keeps many from getting the help they need in time. I mean when my T tells me I don't look anorexic, there's a problem. How do you "look" anything?

I doubly agree!! I'm over forty, so there is no possible way I could have an ED. There is such a misconception among those who don't suffer. What's even worse, is when people tell me "how lucky you are" because I'm thin.
I usually don't respond, but I thank God they are not subject to the same afflictions.
