Moved from A/B Recovery to Current Events
If I see one more ad about dieting on TV I am going to smash it... I keep seeing the fucking things and it's driving me insane...
I also keep reading about how people need to lose weight on online news sites like CNN. Damn articles... I am SOOOO tempted to write the washington post a well thought out article about why people should NOT diet like they say and try to be fit instead...
I get triggered everywhere I turn...
I HATE THE MASS MEDIA...
Oiooops and I'm a commuinication major. Guess I picked the wrong major, eh?

I'm in the same boat...a communication major with a passionate loathing for the mass media. I heard a commercial the other day on the radio that said "In this society to be attractive you HAVE to be thin". I almost drove off the road! Not to mention my MIB adventure.
There has to be something we can do about this. Glad Im not alone here!

:bug I completely AGREE one hundred and ten%
I mean, I am not a media major, but I HATE the message that the media plays. I am more aware now, though...so I doesn't really affect me, although there are other people who are.
And, no doubt if you guys are art majors, then you should take that as an advantage and do something about it.
I did, at least I like to think so.
When I was in ninth grade I went to another school to do this emm, discussion forum on values for teens.
It was sooo cool! And, I chose the topic of the media influencing eds. I said why I decided to do my presentation on eds and it was great to get a message through...I just hope that I created more awareness. :bounce
We must do something about the media, though!!! really! :reallymad
:bug anyway, glad you shared that!!

hi guys,
i have a my b.a. in communications, too. and i am also triggered or sometimes just really fucking annoyed with media obsession with diet and weight loss. remember, though, that media didn't really plant the low self-esteem in our brains. media merely reinforce what we already think to be true (thin is good, thinner is better - fat is bad, etc.). if i had a deep sense of self-worth, how could something outside of me come along and make me feel bad or trigger me into thinking i need to change my body/external self? just something to think about before we go scapegoating media...

Rockstargirl,
Yeah, the media is horrible about weight loss stories. If you want to want an article to the Post, why not do it? It real help you feel like you are doing something, even if it doesn't get printed. You could send it to other papers if the Post doesn't print it.
Good luck and keep fighting! :kick

they dont trigger me, but they do send the msg that everyone should lose weight, and that pisses me off.

You know what really annoys me about them all?
They all say something along the lines of:
"Never be hungry again!"
I mean, duh! Hunger is a normal thing! It's NOT normal to not be hungry "ever again"!

My housemate and I have started a campaign to change channels whenever there's an advert for weight loss products or adverts promising to reduce the signs of aging or anything that says "if you're not a twenty year old model then you are old, fat and wrinkly so give us your money and we'll change your life." I don't think so!
:balloons CHANGE THE CHANNEL! :balloons

Yes, I am pretty pissed at all the ads for diet pills, shakes, centers, surgeries, and magic potions. I mean really where are the commercials warning about moderation of diet and or weight gain products.
I sometimes feel like ed patients are left out on many different levels. We often don't get the medical support and our issues are rarely addressed unless it's an emergency.
