In regards to September Eleventh
<HR>
I found this site and felt compelled to share it with my friends.
Their goal is to get four million Americans to digitally sign the Pledge of Allegiance online, one thousand for every man, woman and child killed by terrorists on September eleventh, two thousand and one. These online signatures will then be displayed at Ground Zero in New York on the one-year anniversary of Setember eleventh this year. This is one way we can show support for our country and its freedoms. By standing united, we are not only honoring the victims but also sending a strong message to the likes of Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and Yassar Arafat
I've pledged my allegiance and I encourage you to do the same. I personally feel that this is one small action we can take to help strengthen our collective resolve. If you feel the same, please forward this to everyone you know.
This link will take you to the site.

I'm sorry but I find this extremely provocative. May those who are without sin cast the first stone...
I'm not going to start a political debate here, but I needed to express my (different) opinion.
Be well :peace

I'm not sure I understand what you don't like about it. Could you explain?

:bluefishy of Hope,
First of all, let me say that I think what happened on September eleventh was horrible because no human has the right to kill others, for no reason whatsoever. There will never be a 'just cause' for killing.
What I find provocative is how the US (eagerly followed by other Western countries) has taken upon itself to save the world, overriding the UN, violently reinforcing an over-simplified black and white perspective of the world, dividing it in 'good' and 'evil'. I think this is doing the world a lot of harm, too, and I feel it's hypocritical given the history of western civilisation.
This bit in particular upset me:
"...the likes of Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein and Yassar Arafat"
the likes??!
meaning evil people? mening Arabs? Meaning Muslims?
(And what about Sharon?)
I feel I didn't do a very good job explaining myself :ugh but something like that.

for Thinking:
I think you expressed your discomfort very well. I am in agreement about the "black and white" thinking. There has been a lot of anti-Muslim, anti-Arab sentiment expressed freely. This is the ugly backlash that followed the crimes of Sept. Eleventh.
I am not signing. "My country, right or wrong" is not a sentiment I espouse.
To Isabel:
Of course, you don't have to be an American citizen to sign and express solidarity. When the towers went down, I believe their were some five hundred citizens of the UK who died. Other nationalities are represented.

Hi,
I'd just like to point out that when starbright said "the likes of..." (it's not phrased that way on the site), she was referring to specific individuals who are terrorists or support terrorism. And the killing of civilians. I don't think that condemning any group of people across the board is right, but I don't think that condemning a few terrorists as individuals is wrong.
I whole-heartedly support my country - when it is in the right - and what happened September eleven was clearly wrong. We aren't always in the right, and we should do what we can in those cases....but when we are being attacked in such a vile manner, I am willing and happy to show my solidarity. I am going to sign.
And as an aside, I was listening to a radio show the other day, and none of the graduating seniors the host spoke to were able to correctly recite the Pledge of Allegiance. I think it is sad, because the pledge reminds us of what this country is supposed to stand for. When we recite it, we are making a pledge for "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." It doesn't begin to suggest that we support our government when it behaves wrongly....it is exactly the opposite, it reminds us to stand for these ideals.
Just my two cents...
