The first stage of Yoga is known as yama which are the ethical disciplines transcending creeds, countries, age, and time. Because Yoga was developed as a spiritual discipline, it is particularly beautiful.:rainbow

The five yamas mentioned by Patanjali are truth, non-violence, non-stealing, continence, and non-coveting.

Note
non-violence. This includes non-violence to ourselves.

Simone,

My exposure to Yoga is really limited - I wasn't even aware of the associated teachings. I knew that the body postures had to do with mind and spirit (as well as body) but that's about it.

Since you're going to be an instructor :yay (I never use those - I had to go look up that cute little similie!)I was wondering if you could tell me a book I should look for, a person's teachings to research, etc. I am more interested in all this each time I read a post from you . . .

Thanks, Simone.

Blessings,
-Laura

Hi Laura,

Geeta S. Iyengar wrote a beautiful book entitled Yoga: A Gem for Women published in nineteen-eighty-three.

I'm so happy to hear that you are interested in Yoga. If you integrate the philosophy with the postures, you cannot go wrong!

:ideai think that it is AWESOME that you incorporate both the postures and philosophy.
too much emphasis is placed on postures and not too much on meditation...etc.

I can't believe you posted about Yoga! I have been thinking about it, but have been hesitant. I started practicing Yoga about a month ago and have experience the most profound changes in my physical, spiritual and emotional states! It is truly amazing. I have not only drastically reduced my b/p episodes, but I also quit smoking (finally!) and I also have found that I am drinking less alcohol (and I really didn;t drink much to start with). I think the changes are the result of the intimate connection I am making with my body which produces a natural respect for it and thus better treatment. Thanks for inspiring me to share my experiences!:peace
