In a fit of insomnia and almost non-stop listening of the new Goo-Goo Dolls cd (which I think is awesome by the way) I wrote this poem inspired by the albums title, Gutterflower. Hope you like. Its kind of long, but thats all right :cute
Gutterflowers
Beneath all the dirt
The grime, and the muck
You’ll sometimes find a small flower
If you look and have some luck
This small flower may be pretty
Untouched by where it lays
Or it may be a little marred
Like its been sitting there for days
Whatever its condition
Unspoiled or a little stained
You can’t deny the beauty
That those petals still contain
This rare thing is called a gutterflower
It didn’t a bloom in a house that’s green
It bloomed right where it landed
Despite the dust it lay between
Its not in a league with lilies
For the sake of how they bloomed
The plants within the flower shop
Had soil, food, and water at noon
The gutterflower did not
It grew despite that though
It bloomed to be so lovely
As beautiful as a rose
It may have been a seed
That got lost along its way
Or maybe it was napping
And it then decided to stay
Whatever that seeds reason
It grew amongst the grime
It grew on its own terms
It grew in its own time
Gutterflowers are wonders
They aren’t a usual thing to see
But if you want to find one
You know where one will be
They bloom where they were planted
Despite the trouble that may arise
They bloomed despite all that
And grew to be divine
We can learn from gutterflowers
And grow despite the dust
You may know a few already
Who’ve grown out of the muck
Bloom where you are planted
Doesn’t just mean a place
Grow despite anything
That may stand within your way
The name is not pretty
But the object sure can be
We can all be gutterflowers
And grow despite adversity
I say bring it on
I have the will, the power
I have the nerve and I have the longing
To be a gutterflower
Gutterflowers
Beneath all the dirt
The grime, and the muck
You’ll sometimes find a small flower
If you look and have some luck
This small flower may be pretty
Untouched by where it lays
Or it may be a little marred
Like its been sitting there for days
