Hi all. This is a request for info, as my bro. has just been diagnosed with osteoperosis (he is in his twenties, it is due to his starving himself for nearly ten years now) and i can find no information on what this means in terms of treatment for him. Any experience, anyone?! I haven't found the link on this site so useful, i need a guide for the stupid, i think!! can he take vitamin & mineral supplements, as he may never eat the foods needed to constitute a 'healthy' diet. Are there drugs he may be perscribed? any exercises? any sites or books you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. I find this a very scary disease for such a young man to have, but i try to stay as positive as he is managing to be! He is my inspiration.

Take care all,

:love Rosey

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your brother, and osteoporosis is pretty rare among guys, but when i was in hospital earlier this year we did a group on it, and basically plenty of calcium, and a lot of the girls had these tablets called calcichew each day before evening meal to build up resistance. As for exercise lots of gentle sort of walking, swimming etc is meant to build up the stregth of the bones, but no pounding repetitive exercise (which is where i go wrong).
I hope that was some help, and i wish you and your brother the best of luck,

Hi Rosey,

I appreciate your need for information, but the best thing your brother can do is talk to the doctor about his course of treatment. With a combination of vitamin and mineral supplements, improving his food intake, getting into a very healthy amount (a few times a week, half-hour a day) of weight-baring exercise, and possibly medication prescribed by his doctor, he can work on rebuilding bone mass and preventing further loss. You can also try visiting CalciumInfo.com (http://www.calciuminfo.com). Also, if he smokes he should give it up. If he drinks he should keep it in moderation (or illiminate it completely). If he drinks a lot coffee or soda he should cut way down or do-away with it. All these things can contribute to further bone loss.

Good luck to you!
Take care of YOU
