Honestly there are only a few TV shows I really really like and The L Word is my favorite!! Unfortunately it is on showtime which means it isn't a full season (meaning the majority of the year)! :ugh

So Sunday night was the last show of Season Four :sad

The L Word is awesome because it is a show about my lifestyle.. Instead of another show being a heterosexual show with maybe a couple of lesbians, gays or bisexuals.. it is a show centered around the lives of beautiful lesbian womyn with a couple of heterosexuals.

Anyway, it is nice that other shows are starting to portray more lesbian, gays, trans, and bis but The L Word does an awesome job and those of us who watch it are very devoted fans! :bounce

As I was saying there are only twelve episodes per year. YIKES. So the waiting period until the following season is torture. Anyway it is good to have a gay/lesbian main show that portrays the lives of "nontraditional lifestyles" that is well written, directed, and has awesome gorgeous powerful womyn!! :girly :girly :girly :girly :girly :girly

I'm with you on this one! This week the L Word withdrawal really kicked in since this was the first week without a new episode. :( I'm so sad that the seasons are so short--but I wasn't a huge fan of this season (what are they doing to jenny!?). Anyway, my partner and I love this show and we watch it every week. We own all the seasons and she and I both love Bette (and Jenny for some odd reason!)

I like the L Word too - seasons three and four haven't screened here yet, but I read all the recaps as they come up on afterellen.com :winky

I lurve Alice ... don't like Jenny though - she is manipulative and underhanded (and borderline unhinged - I feel sorry for her new dog!) Makes for entertaining TV, though ...

delyrium and katherinef

My partner and I are totally :hugon Tina and Bette :hugoff fans :yay :winky Yes, the hopeful romantics for Tibetters.

I really don't know what the heck they are doing to Jenny.. I get so frustrated with the character of Jenny. I think Mia The actress who plays her is great... it's just her Storyline is :wacky :wacky :wacky

We own the first two seasons but refused to buy season three well for many reasons mostly the poor writing, directing and editing of it. Season four we :love almost as much as season one.

Yes good website to catch the latest of many things, huh! afterellen.com that is :winky

We are watching Work Out with Jackie Warner (who is a hottie :kiss) to help the time w/o The L Word!!

call me a bad queer, but i can no longer stand the l word. i think that the writing is just bad. and i'm not wild about the way it portrays lesbians.

i watched the first season, very excited about it, but quickly lost interest. at one point or another, i've actually seen all of the episodes. after the premier epiosde of this past season, i ran away from that show so fast.

it just doesn't do it for me. i used to think shane was hot, but not so much anymore.

I know some lesbians that feel the same way. You are not a bad lesbian for not liking the show. The beauty is we all have different opinions of the show!

What way would you like a t.v. series to portray lesbians. I think the challenge is for the writers to please every type of lesbians out there. I know the biggest complaint at first was there was not enough "butch" characters and they were all "femme." Then some complained there was not any trans characters and then they intro Max. Then some lesbians got upset because the Latino community wasn't being portrayed correctly. I am :supergrin with the show because it does portray many beautiful femme lesbians and I am femme myself and so is my partner. I was getting tired of seeing so many "traditional, if you will, portrayed lesbian butches" and no "femme lesbians" I guess why I love the show so much is it shows that you can be lesbian and have long hair, wear make-up, be into shopping, not be into all sports, etc. It helps wipe away the sterotypical type of lesbians for me and I like that a lot!!

:challenge what would you like to see in a lesbian show? :challenge

Below is Work Out Spoiler for Last Night so Do not Read if You Have Not Seen It Yet...

delyrium: work out was awesome last night. Jackie was hooking up with Rebecca :surprise :surprise :surprise :surprise I have mixed feelings about them getting together!

that is a good question. i don't know. but i would start by saying please show the diversity of our community!

i had a HUGE problem with max. not the idea of having a transman, but the fact that the writers of the show did VERY LITTLE research about trans issues. i almost felt like the lack of correct information was a huge disservice. change doesn't happen that fast. and there was just a complete lack of correct information.

anyway, side note... i can't watch workout because it is a huge trigger for my bulimorexia.... :ugh i literally had to force myself to stop watching which is a shame because i love(d) that show!

indigokaren:

I do agree with the whole MAX situation. I mean I am not an expert on trans but I thought they did the character an unjust representation. I like the womyn who plays her, DS, and actually her girlfriend "BITCH" came where I lived to perform at GirlforGirl. My partner and I met her and she was really nice!

I give you a :yay for realizing that it triggered you and you stopped watching it.

i met daniella sea at an indigo girls show. bitch opened the entire fall west coast tour this past november, and daniella came to a few of the gigs. she was nice and all. bitch developed this weird liking for me. haha hahahha. maybe it was because i was at every show and she already knew me from amy ray's midwest solo tour, when i was also at almost every show. :grin

it was actually really funny. i was back talking to amy (ray) and i said to her "wait, isn't bitch's girlfriend on tv?" amy told me she was on the l word (i had blocked it out) and then introduced me to daniella. i didn't have much to say to her as i'm not an l word fan and at the time i had not seen shortbus. but she was perfectly nice.

I am only on the second episode of season four... And I am likin' it so far!
Jenny is getting way better as a character I feel.
I just watched the first time with Alice and Papi ... woaah :zoinks

:hugon Sylphlover :hugoff
It helps wipe away the sterotypical type of lesbians for me and I like that a lot!!
I totally agree - I love this show so much :bounce I agree that season one was the best by far though - I hope season four is as good!

womyn - what does this mean? Call me a young and naive queer but I don't know what you mean by this :ummm

what would you like to see in a lesbian show?
Alice and Bette - only. And they would have to be a couple :love .

And maybe Helena could be there too - she's pretty awesome.
Perhaps Jenny too. Okay fine the whole cast dammit! :cool

Do any of you read the AfterEllen reviews? They are so sarcastic and funny!!

Yeah, I always read the recaps on afterellen.com, hehe :love

Womyn or womon, etc, are used by some women (er ... womyn) as alternate spellings to "women/woman". It's to do with how language is sexist and implicitly privileges men, and how women are always defined in relation to men (ie, we are the Other). So 'womyn' - it's literally taking the man out of woman!

About womyn - Wikipedia sez :

--------------------------

Arguments for
Feminists who prefer to use these words feel that the terms "woman/women" relate to the historical and ongoing social subordination of women, since the word "man" is seen as an exclusively male term, implying that women are a subset of men, or a deviation from the norm. Those who argue in favour of the terms "womon/womyn" contend that they have the right to choose how a term referring to them is spelled, rather than be compelled to use words that evolved in what they see as a patriarchal society. Others further argue that "womyn" is based on a medieval spelling of the word, and that returning to the old model of waeman and wyfman meaning man and woman, respectively, would be more egalitarian. Feminists in favor of the modification argue that language is a powerful tool that shapes the way people perceive their surroundings, and even how they understand gender and gender roles (see Sapir-Whorf hypothesis). They also feel that the current form of the words does not value women. Therefore, some feminists see these changes as part of a movement to correct what they consider inherent biases in language.

Criticisms against
Usage of "womyn" and related terms is essentially nonexistent outside of some segments of feminism. Opponents of it see it as unnecessary, and argue that it is based on a misinterpretation of the words "man"/"men" and "male." They cite the etymology of the terms "man" and "woman," and note that both the origin and current usage of the two words are already gender-neutral. Furthermore, since "womyn" and its related terms have not been accepted as standard English words, using these terminologies outside of the small circles that have universally adopted them will often be seen as grammatically incorrect or semantically meaningless. Subsequently, those who choose to use the terms will often be taken less seriously and credibly by serious academics.

Other opponents of the terms see the adjustments as an example of excessive political correctness. Still others note that, given that word etymology shows that the word "woman" is not sexist to begin with, unnecessarily eliminating "men" from it exhibits an anti-male gender bias or outright misandry. Further, many feminists themselves object to using "womyn," noting that it serves as an unnecessary distraction from what they consider more important feminist goals.

I think I first came across this in "Politically Correct Fairy Tales" - anyone else remember that book?

I am a married straight woman who is totally in love with Shane. I love, love, love the L word. Thought Cybil Shepherd was a great addition. Don't care for Papi and am totally ready for Jenny to LEAVE! I hate that the seasons are so short. This season felt REALLY short. I have the first season on DVD I'll just have to deal until next year!:reallymad

pixtob - Do you mean All Over Me ?

crazytater - I don't like Papi either. She could have been a really interesting character, but the writers had to turn her into such a caricature ... ugh.

I LOVE the L Word. It is such an honest and beautifully done show. :lubdub

"Alice Pieszecki" is Leisha Hailey, a member of the band The Murmurs :lubdub and the actress who played in the film "All Over Me," which is fantastic!

I love the book "Politically Correct Fairy Tales" that :hugon Katherine :hugoff mentioned. And being a big feminist myself I sorta like the term "womyn." :winky Thank you, Katherine, for the interesting read!

That is amazing that you met Daniella, :hugon Karen! :hugoff I love her, and I LOVE IG too!!! :lubdub

Fun thread!! :gimmehug

Haha yeah, Angelina Jolie is every straight girl's fantasy, it seems!
On afterellen.com I saw a photo of a girl wearing a "Feed Shane" t-shirt, which made me chuckle.
