View Full Version : Do you Buy or Borrow?

I have never felt the need to own a lot of books. The idea actually made me feel "heavy." (I am the opposite of a pack rat.) But recently, I have wanted to buy books- specifically ones that somehow tell a part of my own history, or that reveal part of my personality. I am wondering if others buy or borrow most of their books, and what makes you decide which to do?

I am a total bookworm.
I do whatever it takes to read what I want - borrow, order, buy, check-out from the library.
Ok, I wouldn't steal one, so I guess I dont' do EVERYTHING, lol!

Michelle, That is so cool that you are a bookworm- lol. As one who didn't grow up on books and who struggles with concentration, I so envy those who can sit still and absorb all kinds of groovy info :spinny

I love books. When I have money I buy them, I check them out of the library when I am low on funds, and my teacher co-workers and I have a lending library that we all share from. I knew I had met my soul mate when I saw that my then boyfriend-now husband- also had a huge stack of books next to his bed. Basically, our house is covered in books, books, magazines, music, and more books. I heard a great saying the other day, "Friends help you move, real friends help you move books."

I'm not a bookworm myself but my husband is. He has various interests so he'd rather buy them rather than borrow because then he can refer back to books of his interest of the moment.
When you said, "ones that somehow tell a part of my own history, or that reveal my personality," do you mean wanting to buy and own your diagnosis related books? Forgive me if it sounds like a trick or sarcastic question. I'm just genuinely curious. :happy

Another :slimy here! :muhaha I too hit the library, buy on-line, anything! If I were on a desert island, isolated, one of the things I would want is at least a trunk of books! I can't imagine life w/o books! Shudder, wouldn't want to ;)

I envy you, too. I feel starved for information, but usually have tons of trouble sitting down and getting absorbed. That said, I just picked up a book by Torey Haydn and feel totally gripped. I l ove to read about therapy with children.
:hugon Freeway :hugoff what I meant was anything that I have a special interest in, or that relates to my own personal experience. So it could be about my diagnosis, but honestly I have heard and read enough about diagnoses to last me a lifetime!
:hugon Running :hugoff I love that quote. That's so funny :happy

I am a total bookworm - I love reading, books, linguistics, all that stuff. Always have! My family used to say that I always had my nose in a book when I was a kid - and I did - I just devoured books at an insane rate in my childhood.
Mostly I use the library - I usually read non-fiction, school-related stuff, but I also do as much 'fun' reading as I can. (Although I really enjoy the texts I read for uni, I am a fine arts student so I research a lot of critical theory and psychology type stuff. So really, it's all good!).
I buy books only occasionally - mainly art ones, because these are books that I will come back to time and time again. And actually, I've done a lot of bookmaking as part of my artistic practice. I have been known to debate the merits of different kinds of bookbinding.
i love books. :love
I use the library, charity shops and car boot sales to get books. Sometimes even eBay if I'm finding it hard to track one down! I rarely buy new ones, as I mostly only read books once.
What makes you decide what to read? Do you have a type that you usually stay with?
I am often reading more than one at the same time. I am currently reading 'Animal Crakers', which is a book of short stories by Hannah Tinti; 'Eats, Shoots and Leaves' by Lynne Truss, all about punctuation - written by a woman who has struggled not to deface greengrocers' signs when they write: "banana's, apple's and pear's"; I have just finished 'American Psycho' by Brett Easton-Ellis; and have given up trying with Dorothy Koomson's 'My best friend's girl'.
I hate it when you can't get into a book that looked really good!

LOL -- as someone in the process of moving several times this month, that is SO TRUE!
Books were - and are - my escape.

I love that book. I really related to it *nerd alert* I have corrected the grammar on a sign before :surprise :surprise :muhaha
I have always been a hge lover of books and reading ever since I was a little kid. Hey, thank goodness for healthy vices! :sarcasm. I usually buy my books because I love to feel like I have my own personal library.

I'm a total book worm. :slimy Any time that I have enough money I like to buy books - and LOTS of them - because they make me happy! Actually, I'm a bit obsessed with book shopping. Money that isn't spent on nesessities is usually spent on books (and shoes!) :supergrin I have a HUGE personal library, that I organize by type of book, or subject matter, and it is my most treasured collection. My dream is to have a big room FULL of books... with one of those sliding ladders... and a secret door leading to more books... :muhaha
When I was a kid I read all my mom's old books - she had all the Nancy Drews, Hardy Boys, Boxcar Children, and my favorite - Trixie Belden though I never find anyone else who read this series. There were also just countless others and I loved them in all their vintage glory! I think for this reason I have the urge to buy the books I read - I've got this idea that I'll pass them on to my kids someday and my kids will absolutely want to read them. I also like the idea of being able to share a book with a friend or re-read it at some pt. I guess it's a subconcious way of modeling myself after my mom as she has oodles and oodles of books. My family is full of bookworms. Reading is such a gift - it's the only way I feel like I really escape myself for a while.

I had to respond to this.... Benz, I read the entire series when I was young... and I still have every Trixie Belden book that came out under my bed :winky
Re buying or borrowing books.... I buy whenever I have the money to do so... and my house it filled with books - fiction, non-fiction, reference, kids books - basically anything I'm interested in. And I tend to read them more than once... some I could probably quote off by heart.

I love to buy books - I feel like the books a person owns give you an insight into their character. :grin
