I just wanted to suggest the Anorexia Workbook:How to Accept Yourself, Heal Your Suffering and Reclaim Your Life.
I actually bought it quite awhile ago and started working through it then. I showed it to my psychologist and began working through the activities and bringing it to sessions and talking about it with her and she was so impressed with it so went out and bought a copy. It has some really great information in it and makes you think. It also has some quizzes you take at the beginning and you take the same ones again at the end of the workbook to compare.

There is also a Bulimia Workbook by the same people.

It's by Michelle Heffner and Georg H. Eifert.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I'd like to try something like this, but I'm eating okay now and wouldn't be considered anorexic b/c of my weight. Would it still be helpful? some of my behaviors and thoughts are still dangerous and I'm still working on those.

Any thoughts???

I did a day treatment program with my social worker/doctor. I would see my social worker every day and my doctor weekly. I bought the book when I went to Fairwinds because my roommate had it and I wanted to see what it was like. When I was in day treatment..me and my social worker worked on the book together. I haven't opened it since I got back from day treatment in two thousand five. But I would recommend the book to anyone! Wether or not you are underweight or overweight..it is a great book! To me it helped me much more in the day treatment because I was doing the actual work and no one was doing it for me and because I wanted to actually get help from the book.

Thanks for saying you found the suggestion helpful. It meant a lot to me. Not many people thank me for anything. I hope you can find the bulimia one and you can get something out of it.

starforty,
I think you could still get something out of it. Right on the front of it it says "Cope with critical self-talk using powerful mindfulness techniques". It uses something called "Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)"
Here also are some of the things found in the book:
:bullet The chapters are: What Is Anorexia?, Anorexia Self-Test, Accept--Choose--Take Action, When Control Gets out of Control, Learning To Be a Mindful Observer, Approach Difficult Situations with Acceptance, Choosing Valued Directions, Staying Commited to Valued Living, Emily's Journey to Recovery, Professional Treatment Options, Established Psychological Treatments for Anorexia, Preparing for Treatment with a Therapist, Chapter for Loved Ones and Assess Your Progress

:bullet It talks about what it means to take action, your coping style along with activties to think about that, what we can and cannot control, what you'll do without control

:bullet Very good discussion on being mindful observer

There's just a tidbit. I haven't really gotten any further in the book. I didn't feel ready to dig :digdeep into the book anymore so I haven't looked at it in quite a few months. I admit I'm a little scared :scared at what it might mean. But I get a very good impression of this book at what I've seen at the flipping through that I have done.

Geneveive,
Thank you for such a great post. I am curious to know if anyone has completed this workbook? Did you find it helpful, harmful, or without challenges? Should it be done with a therapist or is it structured enough to be done without help? I flipped through this at the book store this afternoon(quickly), but really wanted to hear from others on their opinions after completing the text. Take care.
Hugs,
