Do any of you :uk have a hard time finding the range of ED literature that gets mentioned here of SF? When I lived in USA I could easily find loads of books, in fact many stores even had an ED section (usually only a couple of shelves, but easy to find). In Uk I just can't find stuff very easily, even in the libraries. I occasionally find something hidden away amongst the medical books, but not much. I've trawled through psychology, personal development, self help and sociology sections and found nothing.
Any ideas? Am I looking in the wrong places? Are other :uk having similar difficulties?

I have just the same problem! :ohboy
The only place I have ever seen a book like the ones in the *Book Club* was in my local library.
It was called Alice Through the Looking Glass - I chose it due to the name :beatnik . I remember sitting in the library for two hours and read the entire book in the Russian history section curled up in a small ball worried that anyone would see me reading such a book. :hairy (fantastic account of AN by the way - no weights though IP is quite detailed - and it is from both mother and child's point of view)
In bookshops in the Uk they have loads of anxiety/depression/smoking as well as the millions of self help books to lose weight or "Think yourself thin" (read that? Its such a load of rubbish) But they have very little books on EDs.
Is there really anything we can do about it though?

hmmm.. I wonder if contacting international publishing houses who publish these books in USA might provide answers as to why they don't publish widely over here....
I'll look into that this week. Meantime.. i'm kinda relieved to know that I'm not simply being a dope and looking in the wrong place!!!

I have bought some of mine from Amazon also have a look on ebay as they have a few. My therapy centre has a library with some books in it to read if your going for treatment maybe see if your centre/hospital have books also?

yes I know I can get stuff on the web, it's just that it's different from being able to flick thru stuff in a bookshop and decide if it's helpful before buying it.... web shopping is cool... but not for books!!! I want to preview them, and read things the day I buy them!!!
OK, so I'm moaning now, but my point still remains, it's very hard to ge the books in UK, even amazon or gurze.com means shipping stuff from overseas.

Yeah I know what you mean hun although I do like amazon as other people leave reviews for the books so you can see if they have helped them.
To be honest I havent gone into the shops to look for any just buy off the web for books I am recommended. Maybe try Blackwells/waterstones or one of the major bookshops as I would of thought they would have more of a choice xx

I loved Alice In The Looking Glass! I did find some bits a little bit triggering but on the whole I found it quite inspiring - especially reading the half from her mother's point of view, because it made me realise what my ED was doing to the people who love me.
I found that Borders had a pretty good selection in the psychology section (I think... anyway it was with all the self-help, mental health type books). It was a bit of a mess of books, they didn't seem to be in any order, but I found quite a few just by reading the titles along the shelves.

Your reply reminded me, we just had a Borders store open near me. Maybe, being a huge international chain, that would be a good place for me to go and look.
Thanks

I have found quite afew in Waterstones, they were in the general health sections or psychology.
What I hate, is when you can only find American books. Sometimes that's fine if it's about the feelings or a journey, but when the book is containing practical advice on where to go and diagnosis then they aren't helpful as the treatment system is different and criteria seems to also be different. That's just a mini rant there!:mad
Are there any that tell the story of someone's journey through to recovery? I always find those very inspirational

In Ireland we have the same problem. However, I no longer am drawn to ed related books, because I am now in a place where I don't attach myself to the ed label anymore. However, in Ireland they are generally found in psychology, spritual, health, popular psychology, self help, medicine, counselling to name a few that I can remember from before. However the odd time I would find a mind in the autobiography section. Hope that helps some...

Ones that I have bought or seen in borders in both Bournemouth and Cambridge are:
'If not dieting, then what?'
'Invisible Girl'
'Wasted' :ugh
'Alice through the looking glass'
Anna Patterson ones
Steven Levenkron ones
The Anorexia Diaries
actually I can't even remember the rest because there are lots. In our ones they are usually in the section after children/family issues eg abuse. Not usually in the pop psych. section but near alcoholism and before the sex stuff :winky
There are also ED sourcebooks and stuff like that.
Borders rocks :kick :yay :bounce

Shrimpy,
Hello! I am probably going to show my ingnorance of the UK, so I am sorry ahead of time. In the US our public library system has an interlibrary loan system. This is where one library from a different city, state, (either public or university based) will loan the requesting library the material needed. Usually, most lending libraries will have a two to three week loan period. I do not know if you have such a system in the UK...again my lack of knowledge, but this has allowed me to "read" a book before deciding if it is one that I would like to own. I hope that you may have a similar type of program and that this would allow you to locate the materials you desire before trying to buy on line or from a bookseller. Take care and let me know if this might work for you.
Hugs,
annebear
